Spent more time <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">scrubbing<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">out the bathtub and cleaning the toilet than the housekeepers we used<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">to employ <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">took to clean our entire house. That&#8217;s how thorough he is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">No one else takes a toilet seat off its hinges to get in where odors lurk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">He scraped round beneath the rim, dipped the entire seat under water<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">flowing from the bathtub faucet, rinsed down the bathtub yet again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">When he was finally, finally satisfied, he called me in, proudly, to display<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">his work, actually gleaming. He was naked from the waist down,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">and I could not help admiring what I have known and loved<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">all the years we have been together, what still feels so lovely and yes,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">even gorgeous, in my hands and in my mouth, what I cradle in my palms<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">Run your hand up and over<br \/>\nthe chewed-up doorjamb,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">gnawed by their Boston Terrier<br \/>\nin his desperate loneliness<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">during working hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">Watch the husband and wife drive off<br \/>\nin opposite directions <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">100 miles each day,<br \/>\ntraveling away from each other in ways<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">not traceable on maps or roads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">Walk through rooms where they tried<br \/>\nnot to hurt each other,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">where he gave up and silently threw<br \/>\npairs of balled-up socks at her<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">until she told him in a whisper to stop,<br \/>\nplease stop.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"font-size: 30px; color: #000000;\" data-wp-editing=\"1\">Adolescence Overseas<\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">eucalyptus leaves, sword-shaped<br \/>\nand blue-green astringent, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">fringes<br \/>\nof auburn bark shredding in fingers<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">that held yellow wheels of farmers&#8217; cheese<br \/>\ngrated in thick slivers and dunked<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">deep in strong coffee, resurfacing<br \/>\nstretchy, glistening<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">while listening to opera in the small den<br \/>\nthat was my father&#8217;s, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">one way to be close<br \/>\nto him in the hours he was home<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">in the mountains we drove up, walked up,<br \/>\nlooked to from every point<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">in every part of a city thousands of feet<br \/>\nabove sea level, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">where fires burned dark-orange,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">nails lay in the streets and leafy branches<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">were attached to car fenders to brush them away<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">meanwhile, I climbed to the top<br \/>\nof a school building, considered jumping off,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">rather than live with desire like nails<br \/>\nscraping trails <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">across my silver-smoked heart,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">altitude-dizzy, arias <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">ascending and falling,<br \/>\nme with no broom.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"font-size: 30px; color: #000000;\">Temporary Angels<\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">I love the cold that keeps snow<br \/>\nfrom melting, the ground<br \/>\nfrom showing its worn winter face.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">I don&#8217;t fear falling now, with all the drifts<br \/>\naround, not even with a recent diagnosis<br \/>\nin place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">I will fall like an angel, arms raised high<br \/>\nto grace<br \/>\nthe brittle air with silent hosannas,<br \/>\nno sound<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">beyond the sweep and rustle-scrape,<br \/>\nthat soft surround<br \/>\nof swaddled limbs a-swish in synchrony,<br \/>\nicy lace<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">Carole Greenfield grew up in <span class=\"ZNx93QP1XNrBdT5MI6SY\"><span class=\"expandableItem\">Bogot\u00e1<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Adamina; font-size: 14pt;\">, Colombia and eventually returned to her birthplace in Massachusetts, United States. Today, she teaches multilingual learners at a public elementary school.
